Oreos Boycotted For Respecting Homosexuals

Hey. You know Oreos, right?

The delicious sandwich cookie with a creamy filling from Kraft Foods that has been the number 1 selling cookie in the United States, as well as extremely popular in countries around the world?

Yeah, that one. Bet you never thought people might have a reason to hate these little tasty bastards. But the world being the world, with ignorant idiots everywhere, this beloved cookie has become the target of hatred and boycott. Why?

Kraft Foods, the manufacturers of Oreo cookies, have been faced with a shitstorm of backlash and bigotry after doing something otherwise ballsy for a food manufacturer: take a stand on the homosexual debate.

Oreo posted a picture of a cookie that sandwiched multiple rainbow-colored fillings along with the text "Proudly supporting love!". I think what Oreo did was both awesome and risky. It's risky because having an opinion on this very hot topic is a brave move, one that has the potential to seriously harm the brand and profits. But that's exactly why I give them credit. Another thing that deserves praise is that their campaign zeroes in on what the essence of the homosexual debate should be: in the end it's a matter of love and interpersonal relationships. Some people see it as an abomination, as wrong to love someone of your gender, yet in the end it's love we're dealing with here. Us straight people can be called crazy for loving the people we do anyway ( I sometimes think I'm crazy for loving my girlfriend as wildly as I do,  but everyone makes mistakes and everyone is crazy and everyone is just beautiful they way they are), so why should gays and lesbians suffer from any kind of stigma because of their emotional nature? Nobody should judge or limit love, it's a crazy debate that focuses on the wrong topics and issues.

Of course, with Oreo doing what they did, it wasn't long at all before the hate-filled bigots sprang forth from their little swamps. The level of hate was amazing and disgusting at the same time. Here's just some of the backlash:

Here's some excerpts if you're having trouble with the pictures:

"I wish they had a dislike button. You gay people make me sick, God made us to be man and women (sic) not gay or lesbian p.s NO MORE OREOS"
"Gays can all go kill them selves (sic) they are sinners and will burn in hell"
"I think I'm going to vomit"
"And I'm now boycotting Oreo. Cya" (15 likes)
"I will never eat Oreos again. How sad it will be on judgement day"

Or these (taken from the Phillip DeFranco show):
Jason Fortuna: "Being gay is totally wrong and should be a crime"
Jonathan Garcia: "Anyone who eats Oreos is now openly a heretic and should be treated as such. Eating Oreos is now a Sin." (personal note: WHAT THE EFF, really?)

Oh, brother...

Now, don't get me wrong: I don't have an issue with people having opinions. That's perfectly fine. But bigotry and sexual orientation discrimination is downright ridiculous. I'm not pro-gay, just anti-idiots. Unbridled violence and hatred are wrong - that's why I have a problem with all this. It's one thing to say "Well, personally I don't believe homosexuality is okay, but I do not hate gays. I will just stop buying Oreos because it's not aligned with my belief system". That's a reasonable statement, and I can respect that. It's another thing entirely to bring hatred and hate instigation at the table: any form of excess or fundamentalism is malignant, wishing harm on those you disagree with is uncivilized, small minded and idiotic. The same goes for blindly hating those that respect the choices and opinions of those you hate. This is what happened here with Oreos: they aren't "pro-gay" as much as they are respectful towards other people's lifestyles, choices and heritage - an entirely enlightened, respectful and civilized thing to do.

Thankfully, there are still those that restore some faith in humanity .
All those people that hate homosexuals arguing that it's unnatural forget that it's just as biological and in-born as having blue or brown eyes. Hating someone (and in the case of Christians, who their faith encourages to be forgiving and tolerant, also wishing an eternity of suffering onto those afflicted by "gayism") based on something that is biological and not choice-driven is insane and ignorant. It has as little foundation as hating people for having dark skin or for not being blonde and blue-eyed: it's the worst, most ignorant and small-minded kind of discrimination. Seeing this level of just pure rage and hatred towards people makes me ashamed to be human. I find it ironic that the vast majority of haters bring Christian arguments to the table ("it's a sin", "God didn't make gays" etc). Ironic, but not unexpected, because although it's not news to anyone that this religion that preaches tolerance, peace, love and understanding harbors some of the most ignorant, narrow-minded and misanthropic people ever to walk the planet, it is still very upsetting to see this level of distilled brainwashing and indoctrination. And this particular kind of hatred is ignorance: it's not something that can be justified (outside of doctrinal views), it's something that's taught and inherited, and the hate mongering starts at a frighteningly early age

  1. When I told my boyfriend this story he couldn't understand what the deal was. I explained again: "It's the bigots that got offended." He paused for a minute than replied: "Ooooh... That possibility didn't even cross my mind".

    1. Thanks for your comment,it really is amazing that regular, un-hateful, rational human beings think this okay, but unfortunately the bigots, hate-mongers and misanthropists have a louder voice...
