Higgs Boson Found, And Why It Makes Your Momma Fat

Image
After 30 years and 9 billion dollars, CERN scientists working with the LHC have finally  announced   the  discovery of the elusive Higgs boson. The sensitive instruments inside the LHC have experimentally detected a particle at an energy level around 126 GeV (which, in the world of subatomic particles, is a really big fatty), and the scientists over there are 99.99999% sure it's the fabled Higgs boson, as it behaves exactly as theoretically predicted. However, scientists are being understandably careful in calling it a "new boson" - just to be safe, until it's confirmed that it is indeed what they started out to discover in the first place. Heck, the discovery was so big, that Peter Higgs, the man who's given his name to this theoretical - well, not anymore - particle went up in tears when he  explained  just how amazed he was to see his theory proven within his lifetime. The large Hadron Collider - or as the scientists themselves call it: the l...

10,000 Year Old Mammoth Found Perfectly Preserved!

Image
They found Peaches! In science-y news that make me happy in my manly bits, the BBC reported the discovery of a perfectly preserved, 10k year old baby mammoth.  ( link ) Now, usually when scientists use terms like „perfectly preserved”, I find they actually mean undamaged skeletons, or, as was the case of another frozen mammoth found a few years back, specimens that present stuff like hair and other non-bone materials. No, this time it’s 100% preserved. Take a look at those pictures and feel free to comment „FAKE” as much as you want. That was my first reaction, but it’s genuine.  See for yourself in the BBC  video . The remarkable hair color has been preserved The specimen is a juvenile, aged 2 or 2 and a half years old, affectionately called Yuka by scientists. The ice has preserved its flesh, skin and strawberry blonde hair –even the trunk is intact! Which can only mean one thing - THEY'VE FOUND PEACHES! Peaches will apparently meet an unt...
